2 reasons that fatigued driving is such a major safety concern

Drivers get arrested every day for drunk driving. Many others get in trouble for distracted driving either because they violate state law where they live or because they cause a crash while not paying attention to the road. Reckless choices like texting at the wheel and drunk driving cause many crashes, and certainly contribute to everyone’s risk on the road. However, there are also other, significantly unsafe actions that people often don’t think twice about engaging in. For example, getting behind the wheel when someone feels fatigued or drowsy is an example of very unsafe behavior. Why is drowsy driving such a major safety concern for modern motorists? 1. Fatigue negatively affects driving skill The most obvious risk of driving while drowsy is the possibility that someone might fall asleep at the wheel. A small but significant number of drivers do realize they lose consciousness while driving because they feel so tired. For every driver who falls asleep, there are others who might experience microsleep, which may not lead to someone totally but instead losing conscious awareness for several seconds. Finally, those who remain awake won’t have the same skill they would after getting sufficient rest. Fatigued drivers often have difficulty staying focused and are more likely to make the wrong choice or have delayed reaction times. Many experts compare how drowsiness affects the brain to the consequences of alcohol intoxication. The longer someone is gone without sufficient sleep, the more their fatigue will likely affect their driving skill and safety. 2. Drowsy driving is an epidemic It is all but impossible for researchers to honestly evaluate how many people drive while tired. However, when one considers the large number of professionals who report not getting enough sleep, the truth is that there may be a very alarming number of drowsy drivers on the road on any given day. While there may not be any kind of chemical test that can confirm that someone was tired at the wheel, their behavior could still leave them open to both insurance claims and civil lawsuits. Learning more about the choices that lead to car crashes can help people who are concerned about avoiding causing a wreck. This knowledge can also prove to be valuable in the wake of a wreck, as informed injury victims are less likely to make assumptions about the ins and outs of their case before seeking legal guidance. The post 2 reasons that fatigued driving is such a major safety concern first appeared on Germany Law Firm PLLC.

What is aggressive driving?

According to the insurance industry experts and other safety professionals, aggressive driving is a major problem on this nation’s highways and byways. In fact, 80% of drivers profiled in 2019 admitted to experiencing feelings of anger and frustration while behind the wheel in the prior 30 days. While not every driver gives sway to their emotions, a significant percentage do – and that means it’s always wise to educate yourself on what aggressive driving means (and where it can lead). Examples of aggressive driving Aggressive driving doesn’t have an exact definition, but it generally means driving in such a way that it increases the risk of an accident. It can be spurred on by things like traffic delays, another driver’s mistake on the road, a conflict the driver has in their personal life or just about anything that tends to inflame someone’s emotions. In practice, aggressive driving often includes things like: Tailgating, especially when the driver in the back seems like they’re angling to pass the driver in the front at any opportunity Weaving around other vehicles, often switching lanes and cutting other drivers off in the process, as if every other driver was moving too slowly Going through stop signs without coming to a full stop, speeding up at yellow traffic light or running a red without any attempt to slow down Passing another driver on the right, particularly if they have to leave the actual road to do it by crossing into a breakdown lane or onto a sidewalk or grass Flipping their high beams on or flashing their lights at other drivers in a deliberate attempt to distract or intimidate them Aggressive driving isn’t far removed from what is commonly called “road rage,” which is an escalated sort of behavior that involves the threat of violence or actual violence. Road rage can turn deadly, which is why the authorities recommend that anyone who encounters an aggressive driver simply move out of their way as quickly as possible and let them pass. If you’ve been injured by an aggressive driver, find out more about your right to fair compensation for your injuries and losses. The post What is aggressive driving? first appeared on Germany Law Firm PLLC.

How inexperienced drivers put everyone at risk

There are numerous personal factors that determine how much of a risk someone poses to others out on the road. Whether someone has their full focus on the task of driving or not and their sobriety can have a major effect on their safety and the safety of anyone else if they encounter in traffic. Another factor that people don’t consider as frequently is the experience level of the driver. When people talk about how dangerous teenage drivers are, too much focus goes to stereotypical teenage behaviors and not enough to how inexperience is truly the culprit for many teenage collisions. Teen drivers are not the only ones who may be inexperienced. Those who have gone long times without driving, those moving to new climates with different road conditions and those who never got their license when they were younger could all cause inexperience-related collisions. Drivers need practice to know how to react The faster the rate of travel in a vehicle, the more important it becomes for someone to react instantaneously to a child running in the road or another vehicle screeching to a stop. There are so many unpredictable circumstances on the road that the theory behind them can start to seem abstract. Someone who has never lost control of their vehicle, for example, would probably forget the first time that it happened how their driving instructor told them to turn into the spin and not to fight it. It is only after someone has had to react to heart-stopping moments in traffic that they gain the kind of skills that are necessary to prevent collisions from occurring. Inexperienced drivers simply won’t react appropriately when something else unexpected happens. The few extra seconds it takes them to cognitively process the situation and attempt to respond could make all the difference. What this means for traffic safety Those attempting to acclimate to new areas or to educate new drivers should remember that the bare minimum requirements for practice hours set by the state are usually not enough to make someone a safe and confident driver. Encouraging as much practice as possible while supervised and in safe circumstances is key to helping inexperienced drivers gain the confidence they need to safely control a motor vehicle. For those not attempting to learn about driving or educate others, the main takeaway might be that one never knows when an inexperienced driver might put them at risk. It is usually safest to assume that other people will make mistakes in traffic rather than expecting them to consistently do the safest and smartest thing. Drivers who recognize and adjust their habits for common traffic safety issues, like inexperienced motorists, will have an easier time avoiding major crashes. The post How inexperienced drivers put everyone at risk first appeared on Germany Law Firm PLLC.

The Four Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury can lead to a multitude of problems, some of which might be lifelong. Almost everything from movement to personality can change with a single brain injury. Complications that arise and the length of those complications depend on the type of brain injury someone suffers. If your brain injury was caused by someone else’s negligence, consider asking a Jackson brain injury lawyer about your options for compensation.

Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries

The four main types of traumatic brain injuries are broken down by severity level:

  • Mild traumatic brain injury
  • Moderate traumatic brain injury
  • Severe traumatic brain injury
  • Penetrating traumatic brain injury

Mild traumatic brain injuries can also be thought of as concussions, the least severe form of a brain injury. People with these injuries only pass out for 30 minutes or less and regain their functioning by the end of the day. There might be some initial confusion about who or where they are and what happened. Memory might be impaired for a short while but is regained sooner than later.

What Are the 4 Types of Traumatic Brain Injuries?

Moderate traumatic brain injuries often involve someone passing out for longer than 30 minutes. The symptoms of confusion and memory loss tend to last longer than a day. Some functions might be impaired but not major functions like being able to move or speak.

Severe traumatic brain injuries involve passing out and various impairments that last several days. Some impairments can be lifelong with speech, personality, sleep, movement, and the five senses being affected in different ways. Someone with a severe brain injury may slur their words, not be able to walk, have blurry vision, or fall into a coma.

Penetrating traumatic brain injuries happen when the skull and scalp are cut open, exposing the brain to the outside world. This can happen with severe head trauma or sharp objects puncturing the skull. The chances of infection are high while the chances of survival are low.

Primary Versus Secondary Brain Injuries

There are also primary brain injuries and secondary brain injuries. These vary in terms of how the damage occurs and when the brain damage stops. Brain damage caused by primary brain injuries is complete at the moment the injury occurs. This means no more brain damage is likely to happen after the initial damage.

Secondary brain injuries involve brain damage that continues to worsen after the initial injury. Hours or days of continuing brain damage can happen due to:

  • Brain swelling or inflammation
  • Changing chemical, tissue, and cellular portions in the brain
  • Brain infections

Do not hesitate to contact a Jackson brain injury lawyer if your injury was caused by someone else. Depending on the severity of your brain injury, you could be eligible for additional compensation.
